Karu

Portable, Self Stabilizing,
Active Baby Stroller

The inventors of Karu came to Lime Design with the idea to create a stroller with no limitations. They wanted to be able to take their children with them on every adventure they went on. So Lime Design began researching and conceptualizing. In order to maximize stability, we designed the Karu with 2-axis gimbal technology that enables you to safely trek any terrain together.

Our team dedicated over 200 hours to Concept Development, Mechanical Engineering, Prototyping, Rendering and Sourcing. Through multiple iterations, we tested various materials, suspension systems, and ergonomic designs to ensure both safety and comfort.

Concept Development

The concept development process for the Karu stroller began with in-depth market research to identify the best approach for design and functionality. We analyzed competitor products, gathered user insights, and sketched numerous concepts to explore different forms and mechanisms. Through this process, we refined the stroller’s look, structure, and features, ensuring it provided maximum stability and ease of use. This research-driven, iterative approach led to a groundbreaking design incorporating 2-axis gimbal technology for all-terrain performance.

The mechanical engineering of the Karu stroller focused on creating a durable, high-performance design capable of tackling any terrain. Our team engineered a robust frame with optimized weight distribution and integrated a 2-axis gimbal system to maintain stability on uneven surfaces. We conducted extensive stress testing, material selection, and structural simulations to ensure durability, safety, and smooth maneuverability. Every component, from the suspension to the wheel assembly, was meticulously designed and refined to provide a seamless experience for parents and their little adventurers.

The prototyping process for the Karu stroller began with reverse engineering existing stroller models to determine the ideal size, proportions, and frame structure. Our team carefully analyzed these models, translating their dimensions into a detailed 3D design to create a solid foundation. From there, we designed and 3D-printed custom components to enhance functionality, integrating the necessary mechanisms for the 2-axis gimbal system. This hands-on approach allowed us to test, refine, and iterate quickly, ensuring that every part fit seamlessly and performed as intended before moving into full-scale production.

To showcase the Karu stroller in its most compelling form, we created photo-realistic renderings that brought the design to life with stunning detail. Using advanced 3D modeling software, we carefully crafted every element of the stroller, from the frame to the wheels, ensuring every texture, reflection, and light interaction was meticulously replicated. The renderings were designed to highlight the stroller’s sleek aesthetic, functionality, and innovative features, allowing us to visually communicate its value and appeal without needing a physical prototype. These high-quality images were then utilized in marketing materials, digital campaigns, and product presentations, providing an eye-catching, accurate representation of the Karu before it was even manufactured.

When it was time to move into production, we leveraged our extensive network of manufacturing partners both in the U.S. and overseas to find the best factory for the Karu stroller. Our team carefully evaluated potential manufacturers based on quality standards, production capabilities, and cost efficiency to ensure the highest level of craftsmanship. We collaborated closely with these partners to refine materials, optimize production methods, and maintain strict quality control. This strategic sourcing approach allowed us to secure reliable manufacturing while balancing cost, durability, and performance, ensuring that every Karu stroller met our rigorous standards before reaching the market.

Prototyping

Prototyping was vital for this project to make sure our dimensions were accurate. We also took an existing stroller frame and 3D printed out our own bed to test out the stabilization mechanisms. By doing this, we can ensure that if produced to our exact specifications, the manufactured product would be successfully functional.
