Modular Lumbar Support
UCOBO set out to reinvent lumbar support with a sleek, modular cushion that looks as good as it feels. Designed to fit seamlessly into any seat—office chair, airplane, car, or café—the UCOBO lumbar support offers customizable comfort without sacrificing portability or style. From initial concept to Kickstarter launch, we helped bring this product to life through a design-led development process that focused on aesthetics, ergonomics, and real-world usability.

Services Used
Concept Development
The client approached us with a clear idea: create a tubular lumbar support that could be used anywhere and offer interchangeable firmness and size options. We worked to refine this idea into something that not only functioned well but also felt visually elevated and appropriate for a range of public and private settings. One of the biggest challenges was making the product sleek enough to carry around confidently—something that would stand out in a market crowded with bulky, uninspired solutions.
Industrial Design
We approached the UCOBO design with a strong focus on aesthetics and material transitions, introducing a minimalist strap system and clean fabric overlays that give it a refined, understated look. The product had to appear intentional and stylish, without signaling “medical device”—a delicate balance that guided many of our design decisions.
3D Modeling & Engineering
Once the final concept was approved, we moved quickly into 3D modeling and engineering. We iterated on dimensions, transitions, and part interactions to ensure everything fit together seamlessly, and to optimize for manufacturability and foam density testing.
Prototyping
This was our favorite part. Using our in-house suite of 15+ machines, including 3D printers (PLA, silicone, color), CNCs, and laser cutters, we built multiple physical prototypes. The first PLA prints were used for ergonomic mockups, and later versions incorporated a breathable outer fabric with multiple internal foam cores. After testing over 50 material options, we landed on a flexible polyurethane foam that offered the right blend of softness and spine-aligned support.
We also iterated the foam thickness and density to fine-tune comfort and portability, arriving at a form that is lightweight, ergonomic, and easy to transport.
Sourcing & Manufacturing Support
Once the prototype was finalized, we assisted UCOBO with sourcing by tapping into our network of reliable manufacturers across the U.S. and Asia. We obtained competitive quotes, ensured factory compatibility with our specifications, and helped the client select a production partner that balanced cost, quality, and scalability.
