The Mackey Mask is a groundbreaking, adhesive-free solution designed to securely and comfortably hold nasogastric (NG) tubes in place for children. Traditional NG tube taping methods can cause skin irritation and discomfort, making the experience difficult for both caregivers and young patients. Mackey Mask solves this problem with a waterproof, hypoallergenic, and fully adjustable design, eliminating the need for adhesives while ensuring a snug, reliable fit.
Featuring a double-contour cheek component, halo headpiece for tube storage, and custom-fit straps, the Mackey Mask makes “life in the meantime” easier for families managing NG tube care.
Concept Development:
More comfortable and secure NG tube solution
The Mackey Mask began as a passion project by Tara Melton, inspired by her son Maacoy’s need for a more comfortable and secure NG tube solution. Traditional adhesive-based methods caused irritation and discomfort, so our team worked alongside Tara to develop a better alternative. Together, we researched materials, explored different designs, and engineered an innovative solution that improves the quality of life for NG tube users.

Iterative Design Grounded in User Feedback
To ensure the Mackey Mask met real-world needs, we developed and tested multiple prototypes, incorporating feedback from healthcare professionals, parents, and children. These iterations allowed us to refine the comfort, fit, and tube placement, making sure the final design provided secure attachment without restricting movement.
Design:
Optimizing comfort and safety
We worked closely with Tara and medical professionals to design the Mackey Mask with maximum comfort and safety in mind. Using soft, medical-grade silicone, we developed a hypoallergenic, waterproof mask that securely holds NG tubes in place without causing irritation. The double-contour cheek component was designed to fit both sides of the face, while the halo headpiece stores excess tubing to prevent accidental dislodgement. Adjustable straps allow the mask to grow with the child, providing long-term usability.
