Octo Grip

Adaptive Grip Aid
for Limited Mobility Users

Design Focus:

Modularity, Comfort & Everyday Functionality

The Octo-Grip is an assistive strap designed to help users securely hold everyday objects. Its magnetic, adjustable fastening system allows for quick attachment of utensils, supporting greater independence in tasks such as eating, writing, or using digital devices.

The design prioritizes adaptability and user comfort. The strap adjusts to various hand sizes and physical conditions, offering a versatile solution for individuals living with arthritis, injuries, or reduced dexterity.

Concept Development:

Functional Independence through Modularity

The Octo-Grip Assist Hand Strap was developed to support individuals with limited hand mobility in performing essential daily tasks. The concept originated from the real-life needs of De’Aires “Ray” Peterson, who experienced reduced dexterity following a spinal cord injury.

The goal was to create a multifunctional device that could adapt to different activities without requiring complex adjustments. The resulting design features a modular system with interchangeable attachments, allowing users to switch easily between utensils, writing tools, and digital interfaces. This adaptability supports greater independence in everyday routines.

Prototyping:

Iterative Design Grounded in User Feedback

Several iterations of the Octo-Grip were developed to evaluate grip performance, comfort, and ease of use. Prototypes were tested with real users, whose input directly informed key design refinements.

One result of this process was the integration of two interchangeable inserts, allowing the device to securely hold a range of objects such as utensils and toothbrushes. These adaptations responded to practical, day-to-day needs and helped ensure the final product was both intuitive and reliable in diverse usage scenarios.

Rendering:

Visualizing Function and Modularity

High-quality, photo-realistic renderings were developed to communicate the Octo-Grip’s design and functionality with clarity. These visuals emphasized key features such as the interchangeable attachments and magnetic adjustable strap.

The renderings were used across various communication platforms to illustrate how the product works and how it integrates into daily routines. This visual approach helped convey both the usability and adaptability of the device to potential users.
